Subject:

Notice of Intent to Use thd RETRAN Safety Analysis Computer Code Gentlemen:

The Long Island Lighting Company is in the process of developing in-house capability to do analysis in the reactor safety area for its Shoreham BWR Plant. The RETRAN computer code is one of the tools which will be used for transient analysis and sup-portive activities as required for plant modification or reload licensing.

RETRAN was developed under sponsorship of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and is a RELAP based code. We have band together with other utilities in the " Utility Group For Regulatory Applications", and request that the NRC generically review the RETRAN code. The fee for this action is to be bore by the participating utilities in the group. It is understood that a specific submittal by any utility will require additional review on the methods and models used in the analysis.

Respectfully yours, t,
