MAR 141990 MEMORANDUM FOR:
D. Tondi, Section Leader, Plant Systems Branch, 00R l
FROM:
R. Wilson, Plant Systems Branch, DOR f
SUBJECT:
S.UMMARY OF MEETING HELD ON FEBPUARY 21, 1980 On February 21, 1980, members of the staff met with representatives from all SEP plants. Indian Point 2 and 3, and Zion 1 and 2.
Our consultant, Franklin Research Center, was also represented. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the accelerated program for evaluating the i
qualification of safety-related electrical equipment in the designated plants.
In advance of the meeting, copies of two NRC documents had been mailed to the licensees: " Guidelines for Evaluating Environmental Qualification of Class IE Electrical Equipment in Operating Reactors," and " Guidelines for Identification of That Safety Equipment of SEP Operating Reactors for which Environmental Qualification is to be Addressed." Not all licensees received their copies before the meeting.
D'arrell Eisenhut opened the meeting by reviewing the history of this program and emphasing the importance of evaluating the qualification of safety-related electrical equipment now that appropriate guidelines have been developed by the NRC. Other members of the staff then reviewed the guidelines, the methodology of demonstrating compliance with the guidelines, and the identification of material that must be i
submitted by the licensees.
A statement prepared by the SEP Owner's Group was read. The group expressed concern that the environmental qualification topic was being separated for early completion, and stated that a followup meeting might be requested. The staff agreed to participate in such a meeting if necessary.
The staff concluded the meeting by indicating that an accelerated schedule for the program was being developed and would be transmitted j
to the licensees shortly after the meeting.
