' L As the elected official representing one quarter of a million people who live between 54th St. and 125th St. on the West Side of Manhattan and concerned about their safety, I wish to submit a brief statement into the record.
Also, I should like to inform the NRC, that the New York City Council is conducting hearings on Indian Point, preparatory to taking a position on its continued operation; our findings and recommendations will be forwarded to you when tia:3 are complete.
Operating a nuclear power plant within 60 miles of nearly 107. of the population of the country is preposterous, particularly if that plant is not safe.

It is essen-tial that these be given full attention by your Commissioc now.
In addition, attention must be paid to the fact that Indian Point has no adequate emergency procedures. No effective evacuation plan has been devised, because none There is no way that the number of people living in the NYC metropolitan can.
