NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION E

WASHINGTON, D. C. 20S55

/

4.....

February 28, 1980 Mr. Bruce Becker 1104 10th Street Berkeley, California 94710

Dear Mr. Becker:

Your postcard to the NRC regional office in Walnut Creek, California, has been referred to me for response.

I regret that this answer has been delayed.

The former Atomic Energy Comission (AEC) had a Congressional mandate to de-velop and promote nuclear energy. When the AEC was abolished in 1974, the NRC was created by Congress for the sole purpose of regulating the commercial production of nuclear energy. The U.S. Department of Energy is now responsible for the Federal Government's nuclear research and development activities.

Consequently, questions about the future of this energy source should be directed to that agency.

We appreciate your concerns and assure you that every effort is being made to ensure the continued protection of the health and safety of the public.

Sincerely, A

Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation 8003190010
