Page 1 of 1 North Anna Power Station, Unit //1 Docket No. 50-338 Report No. 80-21/03L-0 Description of Event On February 2, 1980, with the unit at 61% power, emergency diesel generator 1H tripped on high crankcase pressure during a manual start to verify diesel operability and, as a result was declared inoperable. This event is contrary to T.S. 3.8.1.1 and reportable pursuant to T.S. 6.9.1.9.b. Probable Consequences of Occurrence The consequences of this event were limited because redundant diesel generator IJ was started and verified operable within the hour and again every 8 hours thereafter while the 1A diesel was down. Also, the effects were minimized by the fact that the inoperable diesel generator was restored to operable status within the 72 hour time limit allowed by the ACTION statement T.S. 3.8.1.1. As a result, the public health and safety were not affected by this occurrence. It should also be noted that this particular feature is bypassed during emergency start. No generic implications exist for this event. Cause of Event The reason the diesel tripped on high crankcase pressure is not known at this time. Immediate Corrective Action The crankcase pressure switch was checked by the instrument shop and the switch action was found to be within acceptable tolerance per the applicable calibration procedure. A jumper was approved to increase the pressure switch setpoint to 1.34 inches which is within manufacturer's specifications. This jumper will allow crankcase vacuum to be established in the time provided (19 seconds) before shutdown circuits a re energized. The IH diesel generator was later satisfactorily restarted and declared operable af ter satisfying all surveillance requirements. Scheduled Corrective Action The vendor has been contacted on this matter and further investigation of the problem is currently in progress. Actions Taken to Prevent Recurrence A permanent setpoint change is being initiated. Any further actions to be taken will be determined by the resul s of the current investigation.}}
