About Our Cover Exploring the ancient in order to make way for the new.

That might well be the caption for the photograph used on the front and back covers of our 1972 annual report.

The covers show archeologists from the hiississippi Department of Archives and History excavating an Indian mound at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station site some six miles nort hwess of Port Gibson. The archeological exploration is part of 51P&L's environmental study of the area selected as the location for one of man's most advanced developments in producing power-energy from the atom. The exploration project, unearthing some history that rrught never have been known if the atomic age had not come along, covered a period of nine months and revealed several new histoncal facts about early life in Slississippi.

For instance, the vase shown on the back cover inset is estinuted to be over 2,000 years old, and was made by Indians of the h!arksville culture. It is safe to say these early Indians never dreamed that one day man would do such things as walk on the moon.

.or build a mighty machine where their homes stood to produce from the infinitesimal atom what is considered one of man's most essential servants-electricity!
