File 0260/0498/15526 PRD 79/17, Interim Report #2 #

Defective Topaz Inverters AECM-80/32 On September 9, 1979, Mississippi Power & Light Compan; notified Mr. J. K. Rausch of your office of a potentially reportable deficiency at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station construction site. The deficiency concerns defective inverters manufactured by Topaz Electronics for equipment supplied by General Electric.

Inverters used to supply essential divisional power from station batteries to the ECCS transmitter / trip unit analog sensors have failed.

'Ihe failure is associated with transient disturbances such as those generated on the 125 VDC bus from relay switching coils. Inverter failure could prevent the automatic initiation of emergency cooling

, systems and thus affect adversely the safe operation of the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2.

General Electric is currently evaluating alternative corrective actions. These actions include the repair of existing Topaz supplied units or selection of an alternate vendor to provide an equivalent duty, substitute inverter.

We have detennined that this matter is reportable within the meaning of 10 CFR 50.55(e) . We expect to submit a complete, final report on this deficiency, including specific corrective action by May 15, 1980.

Yours truly,

. L. F. Dale Nuclear Project Manager JGC/JDR:bsh i
