NRC STAFF EIGHTH STATUS rep 0RT This Status Report is filed by the NRC Staff pursuant to the Atomic Safety and Licensing Appeal Board's grant, on June 7, 1979, of the Staff's request for an indefinite extension of time within which to respond to the County of Suffolk's l'.otion for Leave to File a Supplemental Brief. The Staff's last Status Report was filed on January 10, 1980.

Since that Report, the NRC Special Inquiry Group on Three Mile Island has issued a " Report to the Commissioners and the P ublic" which will be served under separate cover in this and other proceedings as a Board notification.

Additionally, the Staff is preparing a task action plan, for approval by the Corm 11ssion, to implement and carry out the various recormiendations in this and other Reports mentioned in our previous Status Reports filed with the Appeal Board.

On January 29, 1980 and February 1,1980, Counsel for Applicants and the County of Suffolk, respectively, advised the Appeal Board and parties that i

s the New York State Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment voted (verbally) on January 29, 1980, to certify a single 900 MWe coal plant.

(See Applicant's " Siting Board Proceeding Status Report No. 3" dated January 29, 1980, and letter from Irving Like, Esq. to the Appeal Board dated February 1,1980.)

As previously required by the Appeal Board, the Staff will file another monthly status report by March 11, 1980.
