JAN 2 21980 MEMORANDUM FOR: Dennis L. Ziemann, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #2 Division of Operating Reactors FROM:
G. Lainas, Chief Plant Systems Branch Division of Operating Reactors
SUBJECT:
BIG ROCK POINT FIRE PROTECTION Plant Name: Big Rock Point Plant Licensee: Consumers Power Company (CPC)
Docket No.: 50-155 Project Manager:
R. Silver Status: SER supplement on items 3.2.2 and 3.2.3 complete; awaiting response on item 3.2.1 By letter of June 15, 1979, CPC provided an evaluation of the effects of a fire in the recirculation pump room. The need for protection of cabling and valve operators in this area was an incomplete item in our fire protection SER of April 4,1979. We have reviewed this information and find that it resolves our concerns in this area as described in the enclosed safety evaluation. Fire protection engineering assistance in this review was provided by DSS.
By letter of September 7,1979, our position on minimum fire brigade size was sent to the licensee. This requirement is also being incorpor-ated into Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50, Accordingly, this item 1: also acceptably resolved as described in the enclosed safety evaluation.
We have previously provided our position for resolving incomplete item 3.2.1 from our SER concerning protection for the spent fuel pool cooling system, and are awaiting the licensee's ntsponse which was due on December 28, 1979.
If the licensee has not yet agreed to comply with this position, a meeting should be arranged with appropriate management personnel to resolve this item prior to ordering compliance.
