NORTHERN CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE - JANUARY 24, 1980 An e. rthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale was recorded at 11:00:08 am (PST) on January 24, 1980. The earthquake was centered 26 miles east of Berkeley,12 miles north of Livermore and 10 miles southeast of Antioch. Si x af tershocks measuring between 3.6 and 5.2 on the Richter Scale were recorded within 13 hours1.50463e-4 days
0.00361 hours
2.149471e-5 weeks
4.9465e-6 months
of the main shock.
Within one hour following the event, the NRC staff contacted personnel at the GETR facility and Rancho Seco Nuclear Power Station to inquire about the motion felt at the sites and any observed damage. The facilities are located approxi-mately 20 and 50 miles from the epicentral region, respectively. The preliminary indication was that no serious damage occurred at GETR and slight motion was felt at Rancho Seco. This was later confirmed af ter inspection by plant person-nel at GETR and conversations with SMUD. Both facilities were shutdown at the time of the event.
A strong motion accelerometer was triggered at GETR, but not at Rancho Seco.
These instruments are usually set to trigger at an acceleration of 11, of gra vi ty.
Minor damage, mostly architectural in nature, was experienced at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory located at Livermore California, approximately 12 miles from the epicenter.
Chuck Burger, SERB /RES, was at the site at the time of the earthquake. His report confirmed that the damage was minor and that many bookcases had toppled and unanchored items had slid.
Near LLL the road surf ace immediately behind an interstate highway overpass bridge had slumped 6 inches.
Chuck took pictures to document his findings.

D. G. Eisenhut January 25, 1980 UPI and AP reported a low level radioactive leak of tritium-contaminated water from a storage tank. LLL reported that the concentration was approximately half of what could leg-f., be dumped into the sewer system.
An NRC reconnaissance team was organized to make observations in the epicentral area; however, the effort was called off on the evening of the earthquake based upon numerous reports of little damage and few pertinent facilities in the epicentral area. Furthermore, there were no imediate reports of surface ruptures.
The NRC staff consulted with representatives of the following organizations to make this decision.
1.
I&E Region V 2.
LLL 3.
GETR 4.
Rancho Seco 5.
EERI 6.
TERA Corporation 7.
Bechtel Corporation 8.
