Manager of Engineering Ederer Incorporated P. 0. Box 24708 Seattle, Washington 98124

Dear Mr. Clark:

SUBJECT:

REVIEW AND ACCEPTANCE OF TOPICAL REPORT EDR-1, EDERER'S NUCLEAR SAFETY RELATED extra-Safety And Monitoring (X-SAM) CRANE", REVISION 1 By a letter dated January 2,1980 we advised you that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has completed its review of the Generic Licensing Topical Report EDR-1, "Ederer's Nuclear Safety Related extra-Safety And Monitoring (X-SAM) Cranes, Revision 1.

A sunrnary of our evaluation of the topical report was enclosed.

Subsequently, we have been advised by your representative that two statements within our " Topical Report Evaluation" may be misunderstood. We have reviewed this advice and conclude that the two statements should be changed to make our intent clear. Therefore, we request that you make the following changes to the

" Topical Report Evaluation" enclosed with our earlier letter.

Page 4, last 2 lines Change:

" consists of two sets of disc type brakes" to:

" typically con-sists of either disc or band type brakes" Page 11, first 3 lines Change:

"With a safety factor of 10 (7 on 90% of yield strength) on the wire rope there is ample reserve strength available." to:

"EDERER also sizes the wire rope to limit stresses in it during a seismic event to not exceed 90% of the yield strength of the wire rope with a 15% margin for degradation, which results in a margin of 1.5 for overload conditions (see page 13) and a minimum of 1.1 for peak seismic overload."

We are enclosing revised pages 4 and 11. Please replace these pages with the enclosed sheets and discard the original sheets. We have indicated the change by a line in the right margin.

FEB 7 Ecc Mr. C. William Clark, Jr. The above changes do not change the technical basis for our acceptance of the design of the design features described in the topical report.

Sincerely,
