This is in response to your letter c er.ber 7,1979.
TFe NRC has recently conducted a thorough evaluation of 1.he safety of Pcint Beach Unit "o.1 in light of the recent problens with steam pe'icrator tube degradation caused by deep crevice corrosion.
Gased on this review, we have concluded that Unit I can be safely operated provided that certain additional tests and inspections are carried' ~out in order to nore closely cenitor this problen. The details of these additional requirements and our safety evaluations on this patter are enclosed.
The NRC has been very closely followinj the situation at Point Beach Unit 1 and has had a nun 5er of teetings both at NRC headquarters in Washington and has had one neeting in the vicinitv of the site to discuss 'this issue.
Si nce we are continuing to closely eva".uate this issue and since tt ure will undoubtedly be additional reetings between the NRC and the licensee, one of those nectings cculd be held in the vicinity of the site.
If after exanining the enclosed evaluations you still would like for the NRC to schedule one of its next neetings on this subject in the lwo Rivers area, please contact the NRC Point Beach Project "anager (Charles Tramiell at 301-402-7070), who ' vill work out the details with you for such a neeting.
