NSD NORTHERN STATES POWER COMPANY PRAIRIE ISLAND NUCLEAll GENERATING PLANT RR #2 Welch, MN 55089 January 24, 1980 Mr. James G. Keppler, Director Region III Office of Inspection and Enforcement U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 ATTN:

R. F. Warnick Reportable Occurrence No. 8045 As a result of RO 79-32, D2 Diesel Generator has been lef t running and loaded to assure operability.

At about 0910 on January 23rd, D2 tripped on high crankcase pressore when the crankcase eductor supply pipe came loose.

During operability testing of the other diesel generator and its associated diesel cooling water pump, a jacket coolant hose on the pump ruptured. A power reduction of Unit 1 was started; Unit 2 is in refueling shutdown.

The diesel generator crankcase eductor supply pipe was replaced and the governor was repaired. At 1335, after a one-hour run loaded, the diesel generator was again declared operable. The Unit 1 load reduction was stopped.

The diesel cooling water pump jacket coolant hose was replaced and at 0147 on January 24th the pump was declared operable.

The redundant diesel generator and diesel cooling water pump were operable throughout the period.

Sincerely,

?k F. P. Tierney, Jr.
