OPERABILITY OF THE LOW HEAD SAFETY INJECTION SYSTEM PUMPS AT THE NORTH ANNA UNIT NO. 2 PLANT The HEB is presently per. aming an ASME Class 2 confimatory analysis of a pipirq system in the North Anna Unit No. 2 plant. For this purpose the architect / engineer, Stone & Webster, has determined that the containment wall expansion due to a LOCA inside containment is about one inch. The LHSI pumps are anchored at the motor end to the containment wall and at the impeller end to the bottom of wells in the base not in which they sit, which is restrained from expanding themally. It is possible that sufficient defomation may occur in the shafts and bearings to impair operability of these pumps during and after accident occurrence)(. conditions they are required to operate for at least 24 hours after accident The purpose'of this memo is to advise you of a possible deficiency in equipment operability at this plant, and to suggest a more detailed investigation of the LHSI ptznp operability under accident conditions.
