Dear Sir:

In accordance with Facility License R-78 I submit the following annual report for the period July 1,1979 to June 30, 1980.

1.

Routine operation of the reactor accumulated 1.2 megawatt hours mostly at 250 kW.

2.

Unscheduled shutdowns occurred on Sept. 12, two on Sept. 21, three on Oct. 9, Oct. 11, Mar. 17 and May 15.

The cause was either a loss of electrical power or electronic transients of unknown origin.

3.

Routine maintenance has been successful in avoiding any necessity for performing special preventive and corrective maintenance having safety significance.

4.

There have been no changes in the facility or in the procedures nor have any tests or experiments been carried out without prior approval by the NRC pursuant to 10 CFR 50.59, 5.

Gross Beta and Gamma activities released to the sanitary sewer system from uCi and less than 3.0 x 10 jon effluent hold-up tank was less than 8.8 x 10-3 the demineralizer regenerat

- LCi respectively.

(No measurable activity was found.

The values represent the minimum detectable activity.)

6.

Air Samples taken in vicinity of the Reactor Building were as follows:

Total number of samples between 07-01-79 and 06-30-80:

49 Beta Activity Number of samples

9.

The membership of the University's Committee on Radiation Sources for 1980-81 is:

Professor Ben Friesen, Radiation Biophysics Professor Peter Hierl, Chemistry Professor Frank Prosser, Physics and Astronomy Professor Robert Sanders, Biochemistry Professor Robert Wiley, Medicinal Chemistry Dr. Martin Wollman, Student Health Services Professor Wiley serves as chairman.

The Nuclear Reactor Committee remains the same.

Very truly yours, Russell B. Mesler Professor REM:de
