Subject:

Arkansas Nuclear One-Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 License No. DPR-51 Reactor Cavity Annulus Seal Ring (File: 1510)

Gentlemen:

Your letter of February 2,1978, requested certain information concerning the reactor cavity annulus seal ring and biological shielding at Arkansas Nuclear One-Unit 1. This letter supplements our responses of February 2, 1978, and July 14, 1978, to your letter.

Our design to preclude the seal ring from becoming a potential missile in the event of a reactor coolant pipe rupture inside the reactor vessel cavity is proceeding. Our schedule for the design and installation of a permanent hardware fix will not allow implementation of a permanent fix during the upcoming refueling outage of ANO-1. Therefore, we now must propose installation of a permanent fix to preclude the seal ring from becoming a missile no later than our fourth refueling shutdown (currently scheduled for Fall 1980). This date reflects an approximate six month extension to the date proposed in our July 14, 1978 letter to you.

We have evaluated interim storage of the seal ring away from the reactor vessel head area and found no acceptable location based on 700322 0 AAC TAX P AYING, INVE STO A OWNE O MEMBEA MIDDLE SOUTH UTILITIES SYSTEM

Mr. V. Stello, Jr. March 16, 1979 1-039-13 space limitations and the logistics of moving the seal ring to the reactor vessel head storage stand.

Please be advised that our upcoming refueling shutdown is scheduled to begin March 30, 1979, and continue for approximately eight (8) weeks.

Very tr'ily yours, na Donald A. Rueter f
