UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 November 06, 2019 MEMORANDUM TO: Craig Erlanger, Director Division of Operating Reactor Licensing Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation FROM: Louise Lund, Director /RA/

Division of Engineering Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research

SUBJECT:

GENERIC ISSUE MANAGEMENT CONTROL SYSTEM REPORT FOR THE SECOND HALF OF FISCAL YEAR 2019 Enclosed for your information is the Generic Issue Management Control System report for the second half of fiscal year 2019 covering the period from March 2019 to October 2019. The Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research is addressing this report of active generic issues (GIs) to the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR) because NRR is implementing the two active GIs. This report is also being provided to the other regulatory offices for information.

The enclosure summarizes the status, activities, and expected final completion dates associated with each of these GIs. The following describes the significant activities that occurred during this reporting period:

  • GI-191, Assessment of Debris Accumulation on PWR Sump Performance.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) closed out GI-191 in July 2019.

Licensees implemented all necessary corrective actions, and the NRC staff verified installation. Activities associated with GI-191 will no longer be reported. This was a significant milestone for the NRC.

  • GI-199, Implications of Updated Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Estimates in Central and Eastern United States on Existing Plants.

The NRC staff completed their reviews of the seismic probabilistic risk assessment (SPRA) reports for North Anna, Peach Bottom, and VC Summer.

The NRC received SPRA evaluations from Callaway, Columbia, and Sequoyah.

The NRC staff issued a letter to all licensees, Treatment of Reevaluated Seismic Hazard Information Provided Under Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations 50.54(f)

Regarding Recommendation 2.1 of the Near-Term Task Force Review of Insights from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Accident, to describe the treatment of the revaluated hazard information considering the Commissions direction related to the Mitigation of Beyond-Design-Basis Events rule.

  • GI-204, Flooding of Nuclear Power Plant Sites Following Upstream Dam Failure.

The NRC staff completed their reviews of the focused evaluations (FE) for Catawba and Davis-Besse and the integrated assessment (IA) for Quad Cities.

The NRC received FE reports from Browns Ferry, Sequoyah, and Watts Bar, and an IA report from Surry.

The NRC staff issued a letter to all licensees, Treatment of Reevaluated Flood Hazard Information Provided Under Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations 50.54(f)

The NRC provides more detailed information on each active GI on the Generic Issues Dashboard. The Dashboard is located on the NRCs internal Web site at:
