2 Thank you for your discussion paper and research proposal concerning the uranium mill tailings site at Edgemont, South Dakota forwarded by

letter to me dated August 11,1980. Recently, Congress.fhittated '

action to deal with the Edgemont problems. It is likely HRC will be.

designated as the lead-agency for the management of a program for any required remedial action at off-site loctions in the Edgemont vicinity (see Enclosure 1). With regard to other inactive tailings sites, the Congress previously established programs of remedial action through the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978 (Title 1).
