PUBLIC SERVICE INDIANA January 2, 1980 S. W. Shields Vice President . Electric Sygem Mr. James G. Keppler, Director Docket Nos.: STN 50-546 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission STN 50-547 Regi n III Construction Permit Nos.:

Dear Mr. Keppler:

In our October 25, 1979 response to IE Bulletin No. 79-23, Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. (PSI) had stated that the reported problem does not apply to the Marble Hill diesel generators.

We also stated that the Marble Hill diesel generators employ a static ex-citation system, which obtains power via a single phase, ungrounded trans-former fed from the generator output. Subsequent review of our response has determined that this is actually a brushless excitation system. This revision of our response is provided for accuracy and in no way alters our conclusion that the reported problem does not apply to Marble Hill.

Sincerely,

. W. Shields TDG:jb cc: U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Inspection and Enforcement Division of Reactor Operations Inspection Washington, D. C. 20555 E. R. Schweibinz, P.E.
