MCAR 32 (Issued 7/20/79) .

States Terminal Block, Cracked Disconnect Links INTERIM REPORT: 3 DATE: January 9, 1980 PROJECT: Consumers Power Cocpany Midland Plant Units 1 & 2 Bechtel Job 7220 INTRODUCTION This report is submitted to provide the interim status and current course of action required pursuant to MCAR 32 and Ecchtel NCR 2367.

DESCRIPTION OF DISCREPANCY Refer to Interin Report 1 (revised) dated August 10, 1979.

PRGBABLE CAUSE Refer to Interim Report 1 (revised) dated August 10, 1979, for a description of potential causes of the cracked dis-connect links. The actual cause for the failures has not been definitely determined; however, the manufacturing process and the type of material used in the process is -

still considered as the most probable primary cause.

CORRECTIVE ACTION Since the last interim report the following action items were acted upon:

1) "Bechtel developed an inspection plan for determining the extent of cracked links in the najor equipment using states terminal blocks. The inspection began on November 26, 1979, and is scheduled for completion by February 1, 1980.

3oth imp (St,te,)hayeinvestigated, via additional testing, the findings of each others' preliminary metallurgical analysis. As of this date, no conclusive results are available from these tests, however, evaluations are continuing. In addition, further evaluations are being conducted to determine the feasibility of implementing .idditional tests to identify the cause of the cracks and establish cor-rective action.

SAFETY IMPLICATIONS Refer to Interim Report 1 (revised).

FORECAST DATE FOR CORRECTIVE ACTION A schedule for completion of the corrective action was to be provided in this report. However, due to the incomplete status of the following, a scheduled completion date cannot be provided at this time:

1) Determination of the exact cause of the cracks.
2) Completion of the inspection plan and evaluation of the results.
3) Establishing feasibility for implementing any additional tests.

A schedule for completion of the corrective action will be provided in the next report. _
