Dear Mr. Deptula:

This is in response to your inquiry dated November 25, 1976,

'regarding the Task Force referred to in some of my doce.ents released under the Freedom of Information Act.

I don't remember whether I ever had any documents related to the Task Force that you don't have, but at the present time I believe I have none, so what follows is based on my imperfect memory.

1.

The Task Force was organized to recommend to the Director of Regulation solutions to difficult problems and issues.

It.was organized some time in 1970 and discontinued late 2.

in 1971.

The Task Force members included the Division Directors who were responsible for the licensing process.

Its conclusions were advice to the Director of Regulation.

In general, its recocinendations were carried out in the licensing process.

In view of the advisory nature of the Task Force and the infomality of its review, there was no direct relationship

' - between its work and the review of issues and the final deter-minations made by the Comission.

I doubt whether the Comission knew of its existence, and I think it quite unlikely that they

~ ever saw any of its reconnendations. liowever, when the Task Force was assigned the ECCS problem in the spring of 1971, this

1 fact was discussed infomally with the Comission.

The Task Force was discontinued by Mr. Muntzing shortly after

. he tcok over as Director of Regulation in late 1971.

I do not know the reason.
