Dear Chairman Hendrie:

The recent events at the Three Mile Island I:uclear Powerplant have brought more clearly into focus sone strident questions about the nuclear safety issue--an issue which I know is one of your strongest concerns. You are to be commended on your initiatives in overseeing the occurrences at this plant, and for becoming the definitive voice which brought the factr to the public. It now seems apparent, houever, that it is imperative that the URC continue to be the of ficial spokes-man and ombudsman for all plants throughout the country. This action will of course require the full cooperation of the individual states and local governnents; specific guidelines for each plant; and a cor:prehensive and continuous monitoring systen by NRC of ficials. It is my understanding that as a consequence of the Three Mile Island incident, the NRC has undertaken an emergency plan to evaluate all nucicar poverplants. I would appreciate your advising ne when such a revieu uill be completed. It is ny further understanding that because of its history, the NRC already has under revicu the Turkey Point nuclear Powerplant, located in ny Congressional Dis trict. I would also appreciate being [ advised uhen this study vill be completed, uhat the results are, and P f f any changes are foreseen in the Connission's approach to investi-gating these natters in light of Three Mlle Island. Foreover, I trust that the NRC is considering the review of its own standards to deter-nine the safety of these plants. I would also lihe to know if such a review is anticipated so that safety precautions can be ret.

Spccrely, DAMTC B. FASCELL Menher of Congress 7 /(' cy/u/',nms DBF:RT u
