Subject:

Dresden Unit 1 Chemical Cleaning Metal Surveillance Program NRC Docket No. 50-10

Dear Mr. Ziemann:

In response to questions from your staff and consultants, concerning the corrosion of type 410 stainless steel during extended wet layup condition, we propose to add addtional specimens to our post cleaning metal surveillance program.

These additional samples will consits of three (3) sets of cre /lced bent beam specimens coupled to 304 stainless steel.

There will be six (6) specimens per set, all stressed to 25% yield strength.

Sets no. 1 and 2 will be placed in the primary system and exposed to the entire cleaning cycle.

Set no.

3, the " Control" set, will simulate the cleaning cycle in demineralized water.

Upon completion of the cleaning, the two sets will be removed f rom the primary system.

Set no. 1 will be examined for general corrosion effects due to the cleaning.

Sets no. ?

and no. 3 will be installed in a controlled temperature cell at 100% relative humidity.

The temperature will be maintained to duplicate as best as practicable the reactor conditions.

Just prior to the return of service of the unit, sets no. 2 and no.

3 will be removed and examined for corrosion effects.

We feel the addition of these specimens to our currently proposed metal surveillance program provides adequate means to monitor and measure any significant post cleaning corrosion effects.

Please address any questions you may have concerning this matter to this office.
