Rod Drop Analysis Docket No. 50/395 .

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

On November 19, 1979, South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) reported a significant deficiency regarding rod drop analysis. On January 31, 1980, SCE&G received a copy of a Westinghouse letter, dated January 16, 1980, that presented an interim solution which provided some reco=mendations regarding the automatic mode of reactor control. Westinghouse also plans to provide recommendations regarding a long-term solution in a topical report that will be submitted to NRC in mid-1980.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the status of the SCE&G program,on this significant deficiency. SCE&G is continuing to evaluate the proposed interim solution. The interim fix will' not be implemented at this time because the Westinghouse long-term solution is expected to be available for implementation prior to loading fuel. If no long-term solution is developed in adequate time for implementation prior to our fuel load, the interim solution will be incorporated into the plant operating procedures. A final report will be issued at a later date.

If further information is deemed nec ssar , please contact us.

er uly yours,
