FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-333 Acceptance of ORAU Certification of Radiation Safety for NRC Personnel

Dear Sir:

In your letter of October 2, 1979 it was stated that the NRC had initiated a course in Radiation Safety which was presented by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) to members of the NRC staff.

It was asked that we accept successful completion of this course by members of the NRC staff as a demonstration of their knowledge in this area,.so they could be certified for entry into restricted areas of the licensee's facility after a short site specific indoctrination, thus reducing the time required for radiatic a safety training to those who are certified each time a site is visited.

The radiation safety training program at the James A.

Fitz-Patrick plant is approximately 8 hours9.259259e-5 days
0.00222 hours
1.322751e-5 weeks
3.044e-6 months
in duration and entails a comprehensive exanination.

Current Health Physics procedures at the site allow much o# this program to be waived for individuals visiting the site aho..ve previous experience at nuclear facili-ties.

Individuals meeting this criterion are exempted from taking the first section of the program, which covers generic radiation safety.

They need only take the site specific radiation training (approx. 2 hrs.) and site specific security, emergency, and safety kOOl 3

training (approx. I hr.) portions of the program.

Successful completion of the comprehensive examination, which covers general as well as plant specific radiation protection practices, is then required to certify the individual for entry into restricted areas of the licensee's facility.

In the past, NRC staff visiting our site have been allowed to take the abbreviated version of our training course when they have had previous experience at a nuclear facility.

We will continue to utilize this training policy in the future and see no need to modify it, since it already satisfied yot'r request to shorten the training time necessary for NRC staff.

However, successful completion af the ORAU course will be considered as ample qualification for the individual to take the abbreviated training course as described above.

Very truly yours,
