Dear Mr. Partlow:

Docket No. 701257 License No. SNM1227 R_'erence:

Letter, H. P. Estey to W.

T. Crow, dated August 27, 1979, subject " Contaminated Clothing Laundry Facility".

In the reference letter, Exxon Nuclear requested an amendment to our license to test the cleaning of contaminated clothing in a commercial unit laundry at its Horn Rapids fuel fabrication plant.

The NRC license reviewer has indicated that a material accountability discussion should also be furnished with this amendment application.

You are advised that this installation will be a temporary one used to assess whether a permanent one will be desirable. We intend to use this facility to evaluate the effectiveness of the commerical dry cleaning process to remove uranium from contaminated protective clothing. Further, we intend to use this facility to determine the gaantity of uranium contained and/or removed from protective clothing for accountability significance. We believe that this test will provide a more accurate evaluation of uranium contained on protective clothing than previous tests carried out at the Hanford laundry.

Any uranium removed from the protective clothing will be analytically measured prior to discard or prior to adding to our SNM inventory. If at son.e future date a permanent facility is installed, our safeguards fundamental control plan (XN-12) and internal procedures will be modi-fled accordingly.

Pesults of this test will be used to modify those documents.
