SUBJECT:
RANCHO SECO FIRE PROTECTION MODIFICATION - GRADE LEVEL CORRIDOR.
Paragraph 3.1.22(2) of our SER noted that SMUD would reroute or apply thennal barriers to Channel B conduits associatdd with the auxiliary feedwater system, de::ay heat removal system, and diesel generator
. located in the grade level corridor. By letter of December 31, 1979, SMUD indicated that certain of these Channel B cables were associated circuits whose function or failure would not be required for safe shutdown, although a hot short involving these potentially could have adverse effects on safe shutdown. equipment. For these associated circuits where a hot short could affect safe shutdown equipment, the licensee has proposed to route these in separate conduits without power cables to remove the potential for ho't shorts that could render Channel B equ@ent inoperable.
Additionally, Channel B cables associated with the diesel generator and required for safe shutdown will be rerouted out of the grade level corridor.
Based on the above, we find that the design that has been proposed for implementing modification 3.1.22(2) will provide the protection we intended in the Rancho Seco fire protection SER, and are, therefore, I
acceptable.
