IE Bulletin 79-25 Failure of Westinghouse BFD Relays In Safety Related Systems
Reference:
J. M. Pilant to E. M. Howard letter dated October 6, 1976 Subject - IE Circular 76-02
Dear Mr. Seyfrit:
The subject bulletin requested that certain actions be taken provided certain styles of Westinghouse BFD relays were installed in safety related systems at Cooper Nuclear Station.
As stated in the reference letter, there are seventy eight (78) BFD relays used for alarm and ground indication on safety related electrical switchgear.
These BFD relays are not of the types referenced in IE Bulletin 79-25.
The BFD relays in use at Cooper Nuclear Station are Models 22 (four pole) which the Westi, ghouse Technical Bulletin (NSD-TB-79-05) excludes from the overtravel t' mern. These relays are normally deenergized and are checked for operation once per operating cycle.
One failure of this type relay has been experienced since 1976.
Based on the relay types we have in service and our favorable experience with them, no further action is planned with respect to IE Bulletin 79-25.
If you should have any questions concerning this matter, please contact me.
Sincerely, qM J
Pilant Director of Licensing and Quality Assurance JMP:PJB:cg 8002140
