SUBJECT:

FLANT EVACUATION At 1:55 p.e. on Jamm:y 9, the process area of the Fuel Fabrication Facility was evacua ted for about 20 cinutes when a cloud of mist ernerged fron a fuel pellet sintering f.:rnace. An imedia te 1.nves tiga tion revealed that an excessive amount of water had inadvertently been ad=itted to the sintering furnace through a hur::idi ty-coctrolled hydrogen line, and that a cloud of stea= bad resulted froca this water contacting the het =e ta l. Air semples in the area and nose semears of personnel in the it:=ediate area were norcal. After about two hours, all surveys had been co:pleted t=d cormal operations resu:ced.

No release of radioactivity occurred.

There has been no media interest and ceither the licensee nor the NRC plan a press release.
