SUBJECT:

EVALUATION OF TMI SAFETY RELATED EQUIPMEN %

PERFORMANCE

' hy S.

The TMI accident offers the chance to obtain valuable data with bL regardtotheexposureandperformanceofsafetyrelatedequipment.{*g In conjunction with our ongoing Qualification Testing Evaluation Research Program we would like to obtain the necessary exposure CD4 and performance data and make arrangements to obtain a representati sample of the equipment.

It is proposed that the details for this evaluation be developed by the NRC Qualification Testing Evaluation Review Group which currently provides guidance in this area. We would expect to broaden the participation on the review group for the TMI evaluation to include appropriate laboratory and industrial organizations. The specific early work items would include the following:

1.

Determine the exposure environment as a function of location and time.

2.

Determine the safety related equipment performance during the accident.

3.

Determine the equipment that should be removed for further evaluation.

4.

Establish and implement a systematic postmortem examination of this equipment.

MAY 18 1979 John G. Davis Your cooperation is requested in securing the necessary data and equipment.

Initially, I would appreciate it if you could arrange for the key members of the Qualification Testing Evaluation Review Group to meet with appropriate TMI personnel. This evaluation has been discussed with Bill Rutherford of your staff who is currently providing support for our research program for qualification testing.

The RES contact is Ron Feit.
