Dear Mr. Grier:

NRC IE BULLETIN NO. 79-23 POTENTIAL FAILURE OF EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR FIELD EXCITER TRANSFORMER NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION In reply to IE Bulletin No. 79-23 dated September 12, 1979, we offer the following response:

1. The connection between low KVA rated potential trans-formers and high KVA rated EDGs are such that the circulating harmonic currents cannot flow. Consequently, no corrective action is required.
2. Full load test of the emergency diesel generator for a duration of not less than 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
, of which 22 hours2.546296e-4 days
0.00611 hours
3.637566e-5 weeks
8.371e-6 months
will be at a load equivalent to continuous rating (4430 KW) and 2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
at a load equivalent to the 2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
rating (4873 KW) will be conducted prior to the commercial operation of the plant. The tentative dates will be September, 1984 for Unit No. 1 and July, 1986 for Unit No. 2. The test will also verify that voltage and frequency requirements are maintained and that the cooling system will function within design limits.

Should additional information be desired, we will be pleased to further discuss it with you.

Very truly yours,
