INTERROGATORY NO. 7-1:

On page 5.5-5 of the PSAR, it says,

. Applicant notes the NRC has not approved the present applicant design."

There are discussions.

(The topic is protection against missiles generated when there is recirculation pump overspeed.)

a.

Have there been meetings on this item, and if so what outcome?

b.

If not, are any scheduled?

ANSWER:

a.

This item was discussed with NRC Staff on December 20, 1978.

INTERROGATORY NO. 7-2:

On page 5.5-4 of the PSAR, it states the pump impeller is designed for as long a " life" as is practical, a.

How often is the impeller to be inspected for wear or damage?

b.

How is rotation of the impeller prevented from causing friction overheating?

ANSWER:

a.

There is no regular inspection planned for the recirculation pump impellers.

ok b.

The impeller is cooled by the flow of water through it.

INTERROGATORY NO. 7-3:

There is a dearth of information on the pump in the PSAR.

Therefore, please answer the below elementary questions.

a.

Are the recirculation pumps centrifugal?

b.

How many vanes in the impeller of' each pump?

c.

What is the minimum thickness of the pump case?

d.

Are the vanes open or shrouded?

e.

If not a centrifugal pump, what type is the recirculation pump (s) ?

f.

By how large a factor is the velocity of the liquid in the impeller reduced as it flows from the impeller to the disch, arge outlet?

g.

Is the recirculation pump impeller cast as one piece of metal?

h.

Will any of the stuffing box material contain Teflon?

i.

Classify the recirculation pump (s) as to:

1578 354

_2_

1.

Intake.

2.

Stage operation.

3.

Output head.

4.

Impeller, as to number of blades, and type of vanes.

AN5WER:

a.

The recirculation pumps are centrifugal.

b.

The recirculation pump impeller has five vanes, c.

The minimum thickness of the recirculation pump case is 2.91".

d.

The recirculation pump impeller vanes are double shrouded.

e.

N/A.

f.

The velocity of the liquid in the impeller is reduced by approximately 2.18 to arrive at the velocity of the liquid at the pump discharge outlet.

g.

The recirculation pump impeller is cast as one piece of metal.

h.

None of the recirculation pump stuffing box material will contain teflon.

i.

The recirculation pump is a single suction intake, single stage operation centrifugal pump developing 780 feet of discharge head.

For vane (blade) information, see b.
