Dear Mr. Neary:
-Thank.you for your letter expressing concern about the method proposed by Metropolitan Edison for decontaminating the radioactive waste water in the auxiliary building of Unit 2 at Three Mile Island.
Your letter will be included in the body of information.used by our staff in making. its cecision on this. issue.
- The method proposed is limited to the decontamination of the waste water currently stored in tanks in the~ auxiliary building. You are correct that 1

processing of this water will not remove all of the radioactivity, but the processing will clean up the, water. to the extent that it will not pose further risk to the public or operations personnel.
In addition, before any of the decontaminated waste water is disposed of, NRC will issue an f
environmental assessment and give the public an opportunity to comment on a proposed. disposal method.

Recently the Comission authorized the use of EPICOR-II for processing of this waste water.
I am enclosing a copy of the Commission's Memorandum and Order on this subject.
I am. also enclosing, for your information, the staff discussion of public~ comments received on the use of EPICOR-II which was provided to the Commission during their consideration of EPICOR-II.
I will' send you copies of future environmental assessments that pertain to the processing of reactor wastes at THI.
