i Docket No. 50-320 The Honorable Richard S. Scheiker United States Senate Washington, D.C.
20510 i
Dear Senator Schweiker:
We are pleased to respond to your request for information concerning a claim for damages arising out of the Three Mile Island accident on e
March 28, 1979 submitted by Gilbert and Laura Freedman.
Because their letter was dated June 12, 1979, but was only referred to the' Commission by the Department of Energy on August 30, 1979, staff from our indemnity group thought the Freedmans should be contacted by telephone to infonn them of the procedures that have been followed in conn, ection with claims arising out of the Three Mile Island accident.
Basically, they were informed that the only class of claims that the insurance pools have been allowed by the Federal District Court for the middle district of Pennsylvania to pay are claims for evacuation and lost wages incurred by pregnant women, pre-school age children and their families living within a five-mile radius of the Three Mile Island plant. We indicated to the Freedmans that they should resubmit their claim to the pools and that payment of their claim and all other claims w;uld depend on the decision made by the court.
Sincerely, ORIGINAL StGNED BY R. G. SMITb Lee V. Gossick Executive Director for Operations Enciosures:
