Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation FROM:

Richar'd' H. Vollmer, Director Three Mlle Island-2 Sapport

SUBJECT:

PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF REACTOR BUILDING WATER SAMPLES 4.s, We received today very preliminary results of the reactor building water sample taken a week ago. Water samples were taken at locations near the top, middle and bottom of the 8 feet of water in the reactor building.

The samples showed avgama activity of about 800 mr on contact with the glass vial containing 30 milliliters of sample. The total exposure to perform the operation of drawing the samples was 0.075 manrem.

The two upper samples were clear liquid with a slight yellow tint. The lower sample was greenish with visibile bulky solids. These solids were centrifuged and, although not yet analyzed, showed predominant peaks associated with cerium and lanthanum.

Regarding the liquid, all samples showed approxisately the activities Itsted below:

Isotope Activity (uCi/ml)

Cs 137 175 Cs 134 40 La 140 0.1 1 131 0.03 The inner-plate end of the penetration through which the samples were drawn, residing about 2 feet above the containment water, was also analyzed. Its size is 4 inches in diameter with a 1 inch center hole.

The dominant activity 'on this coupon was tellurium 129m. The main isotopes plated out on the coupon are as follows:

Isotope Activity (uCi)

Te 129m 24 Cs 137 2

Cs 134 0.5 e

Nb 95 1.7 Ru 103 0.6 2223 311 Ru 106 0.4 7910270397

Harold R. Denton August 31,1979 Substantial additional analysis is being perforred on these samples.

As soon as these numbers are confirmed and/or additional information on the samples is available, it will be passed along to you.
