Dear Ms. Shineflug:

This is in response to ycur letter dated June 25, 1979 to Dr. Hendrie which requested that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) be prepared prior to the chemical decontamination of Dresden Nuclear Power Station Unit No. 1.

We are currently reviewing the need for such an impact statement for the decontamination as a result of a petition by Mrs. Kay Drey dated March 10, 1979.

A copy of our response to Mrs. Drey and the related Federal Register notice are enclosed for your information. Please be assured that the Dresden decontamination will not go forth until the need for an Environmental Icpact Statement is resolved.

We will provide you with copies of our decision on this matter when we have completed our review.

With respect to the specific questions posed in your letter the following answers are provided:

Ql. What will be done with the flushing solution and the radioactive

" crud" at the end of the cleaning?

A.

The chemical cleaning solution will be solidified into a vinyl ester plastic resin and buried in a commercial low level waste burial site. The site will be chosen to preclude interaction between the solidified buried waste and ground water.

Q2.

Has either Commonwealth Edison or the U. S. Department of Energy secured a contract for disposal?

A.

Yes, Commonwealth Edison has a contract that permits disposal at either Beatty, Nevada or Hanford, Washington.

.s Ms. Marilyn Shineflug Q3. What inquiry has been made into the possibility the decontamination solution may hasten the migration of radionuclides into the ground water?

A.

The migration of radionuclides into the ground water will be prevented by solidifying the waste and disposing of it at dry western desert sites where there will be no interaction with ground water because of the extremely deep water table.

incerely, h
