Identical letters have been sent to those on the attached

Dear Mr. Feehrer:

list.

Thank you for your recent letter concerning the accident at Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit 2 expressing your views on nuclear power.

We appreciate your concerns and assure you that every effort is being made to ensure the continued protection of the health and safety of the public not only at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, but also at all nuclear power plants.

We have taken or are taking a number of actions with respect to all nuclear power plants as a result of the Three Mile Island accident.

Specifically, full-time inspectors have been assigned to each operating plant utilizing Babcock & Wilcox pressurized water reactors like those at Three Mile Island.

In addition, the licensees of all these plants which were not already shut down have voluntarily shut down their plants.

We are issuing confirmatory orders to the licensees of all Babcock & Wilcox reactors like those at Three Mile Island to assure that necessary plant modifications, additional training and revised operating procedures will be effected prior to resuming operation.

Licensees of all operating plants utilizing pressurized water reactors have been instructed to take specific actions with regard to the status of certain equipment, plant procedures, operator actions and facility designs.

Licensees of all operating plants, including those utilizing boiling water reactors, have been instructed to provide us with additional information with regard to their fecilities in light of the Three Mile Island accident.

In addition, substantial effort is being expended within this egency to evaluate the factors which contributed to the Three Mile Island accident and to prevent a similar occurrence in tne future.

We will carefully review all the information obtained and developed as a result of the Three Mile Island accident and take whatever further action is deemed appropriate.

Sincerely, LpdgndSiped D 5.!L M Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation 252 hfield:mt ton 5-

s

,e Sirs:

INFERIOR personnel, machinery, operation, management, shut-down procedures...

LIES, blatant and premeditated, in regards to actual millirem releases, the safety of their facility and rate increases...

by the Metropolitan Edison Company.

Surely such practices should have been noticed by the license-granting and (allegedly) supervising and inspecting Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Perhaps now you will do your job. I wish that you'd keep your nuclear experiments in the laboratory and NOT in operation. The horro. you nearly unleashed in Middletown erases the costly and fractional electric oicput of all nuclear generating stations.

13% of this nation's TOTAL electricity and the strong possibility of my five-year old son developing leu-kemia certainly does not justify the continuing of these flawed and near-fatal establishments.

If you have the courage, the intelligence, any trace of humanity--close TMI forever, and the other 70 timebombs contaminating your world.

And write me if there's any segment of this letter that's in error.

I dare you. Because Three FEle Island proved I'm right-and you're wrong.

March 29, 1979 Sir:

In the frightening, ungodly, near-holocaustic view of what's just occurred at your supposedly-safe nuclear generating fiasco called Three Mile Island, situated outside Middletown, Pa., you have absolutely no alternative but to force closure of this and ALL flawed, potentially-lethal nuclear stations.

What will it take? What will it require? A thousand deaths next time? More patronizing and devious claims by you and the nuclear utilities r, hat these installations are safe?

We, here, came within a razor blade's width of the first and greatest civilian calamity from nuclear ineptness since Himshima.

Wake up.

Do your job. You must live on this polluted globe, too.

Hesitate-arx1, in time, another fail-safe device, de-signed to effectively handle any crisis, will fail-as Three Mile Island's failed ingloriously-and you won't have to worry about providing energy for the future.

The utilities' bribes can't be worth more to you than your own health, can they? Think! There was leakage here. There was contamination here.

Your, and their, credibility is gone forever.

Dear Mr. Denton; You and your Commission look like fools and I am not so sure that you aren't. You do not deserve the position of responsibility in which you have been placed. You will go down in history as bumbling, inept bureau-crats unless you take strong action to stop the proliferation of nuclear plants across the country. But this would be impossible for you, wouldn't it? You are too narrow-minded to see the hand writing on the wall.
