Dear Mr. Grier:
NRC IE BULLETIN No. 79-04 NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM GENERATING STATION In response to your letter of March 30, 1979, transmitting NRC IE Bulletin No. 79-04 which was received on April 16, 1979, we hava 4.nvestigated this matter with respect to applicability to Sale:
No. 1 and 2 Units.
The following are the results of our 2
investigstion:
1.
The Seismic Category I Piping Systems where the 3, 4, or 6-inch diameter valves are installed are:
A.
Chemical and volume Control System (CVC)
B.
Safety Injection System (SIS)
The 3-inch diameter valves that were used in the CVC (CV) and SIS (SJ) systems are identified as follows:
valve Mark owner 's valve No.
FA 33 loCvo63 FA 33 loCvo74 FA 33 loCvo78 FA 33 loCvo80 FA 33 loCv274 FA 33 loCv275 2232 110 FA 33 loSJ150 The 4-inch valve s that were used in the Cv0 System are identi-fied as follows:
FA 34 loCvo47 FA 34 loCvo52 7906070$g
Mr.

Grier h/30/79 The 6-inch valves that were used in the SIS System are identi-fied as follows:
Valve Mark Owner's Valve No.
FA 35 11SJ0h3 FA 35 12SJoh3 FA 35 13SJoh3 FA 35 1hSJ0h3 FA 35 11SJ156 FA 35 12SJ156 FA 35 13SJ156 FA 35 lhSJ156 2.
In 1973 when computer analyses of piping systems which con-tained Velan swing check 6-inch valves were taking place, the weight of the valves used at that time was h50 pounds.
(Our valve list reflected this vaight.1 When the problem of mistaken weights was made known to us recently, we rechecked our manu-facturer's prints and found that the 225 pounds had been crossed out and the corrected weight of h50 pounds was noted in red pencil, confirming our previous checks and calculations.
3 The 3-inch and h-inch valve weights were checked against our manufacturer's prints in March 1979 and piping calculations were rerun to reflect valve weights of 200 pounds and 325 pounds, respectively.
The results of our original calculations were found acceptable at this time, using the latest 200 and 325 pound weights.
These weights had been supplied by Velan and marked in red on their prints.
Until such time that we receive final confirmation from Velan, our calculations reflecting 200 and 325 pounds, respectively, vill be used compared to the values shown in the bulletin.
h.
The affected systems were checked for supports.
Their supports were evaluated using the new calculated loads and were found acceptable.
Therefore, no modifications to the piping systems or their supports are contemplated.
Since the weights used for the calculations were equal to or greater than those shown in the bulletin, our calculations are therefore conservative.
5 The program that was used to do these calculations was PIPDYN II.
This program was prepared by Franklin Institute Research Labora-tories, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
6.
Should we receive valve prints containing higher values than those used by us, calculations using final valve weights for the 3 and 4-inch valves will be rerun.
