Essential Service Water Pump Anchor Bolts

Dear Mr. Seyfrit:

On April 23, 1979, the Nuclear Regulatory Comnission ( MRC) was informed of a design deficiency involving the essential service water pump anchor bolt load-carrying capabilities for Kansas Gas and Electric Company / Kansas City Power & Light Company (KG&E/KCPL 's) Wolf Creek Plant. The design deficiency was reported by KG&E representatives to Mr. Oberg of your staff at the Wolf Creek site purcuant to the requirements of 10CFR50.55(e) . Since that date a design review cf the essential service water pump anchor bolt design has been underway, but has not yet been completed. The preliminary indications from the design review are that the anchor bolts as originally released for construction may be adequate and that the significant deficiency report may be withdrawn. However, since the design review is still in pro-gress, it is not appropriate to make that judgment at this time.

It is expected that the review will be completed in the near future and that a final report will be transmitted to the URC on or before July 1, 1979.

Should additional information be required before that time, please do not

.esitate to contact the undersigned.

Very truly yours, Iggd h &U GLK:bb
