c Re:
Shipment of TRIGA fuel in MH-1 A cask by Jerry Luckow of White Plains, Maryland
Dear Mr. Mcdonald:
Changes in the number of TRIGA fuel elements to be delivered to the various sites from Diamond Ordnance Radiation Facility necessitate M a slight change in the new TRIGA basket configuration.
For one shipment it will be necessary to use four of the basket cavities for regular length fuel elements that were originally sized for the follower length elements. The follower cavities are 13.44 inches deeper than the regular cavities.
In order to more readily remove the regular length fuel elements from the follower length cavities and to control the movement of the element in the cavity, we propose to bolt a 13.44 inch long spacer to the bottom of four of the follower length cavities.
This spacer will be made from 1.5 inch diameter by 16 ga. wall aluminum tubing with welded plate ends as shown on the enclosed drawing No.1032-1, sheet 3.
Each spacer is calculated to weigh 0.45 pounds including the ends, and is anchored by a 5/16 x 18 SS bolt to the bottom plate in the follower tube. A.375 inch diameter hole will be drilled into the bottom plate of the follower tubes to accept the bolts.
If the cask were to be involved in a top end crash, the spacers, being anchored to the bottom of the follower length tubes, will not add to the load on the fuel elements.
Large margins of safety are provided in both directions by the compressive strength of the spacer tubes and the bolt anchor.
Although this modification to the basket has minimal effect on the safety of the shipments, we wa..c you to be aware of the change and request your_ approval to make the change.
If you have any questions regarding this change or any part of the basket, please contact me at (614) 488-1075.
Very truly yours, h$-~ (
