Docket No. STfl 50-437 D

Gentlemen:

During the May 10, 1977, session of the evidentiary hearing in the captioned matter, the Staff introduced direct testimony regarding the

" turbine missile question.'- That testimony was incorporated into the record as if read following Tr. 5660.

As a result of recent testing of turbine missile impacts on steel targets by the Electric Power Research Institute, Dr. John O'Brien, one of tne Staff witnesses who sponsored the above testimony, has concluded that a portion of the Staff testimony may be incorrect.

The enclosed memorandum from Dr. O'Brien to the undersigned explains the basis for that belief.

The Staff is currently in the process of reproducing the test report referred to by Dr. O'Brien and will send it to the Board and parties as soon as there are sufficient copies.

In addition, the Staff is currently examining the test report to determine wnat effect, if any, it has on the conclusions reached in the above-referenced Staff testimony.

The Staff will, of course, report the results of its reexamination of the conclusions reached in the testimony when that reexamination is compiete.

Sincerely, Stephen M. Schinki Counsel for NRC Staff Enclosure As Stated 79012209:
