SAFETY EVALUATION OF V/AP-9220, "WESTIfiGHOUSE ECCS EVALUATION MODEL, FEBRUARY 1978 VERSION " FEBRUARY 1978 The staff of the Nuclear Regulatory Comission has completed its review 4
of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation Topical Report WCAP-9220 (Proprietary) and WCAP-9221 (Non-Proprietary) entitled " Westinghouse 3
ECCS Evaluation Model February 1978 Version." The staff has included in its review the methods used to correct errors in the code used for calculating zirconium-water reaction heat generation, transmitted by Westinghouse letter dated April 7,1978. A sumary of our evaluation is enclosed.
As a result of its review, the staff has concluded that the revised j Jistinghouse ECCS-Evaluation Model described in the enclosed Safety
~ Evaluation Report is an acceptable model and is in compliance with Appendix K to 10 CFR Part 50. Topical reports WCAP-9220 and WCAP-9221 must be revised to reflect the approved model described in the enclosed
_ Safety Evaluation Report.
Accordingly, the revised version of topical report WCAP-9220 will be acceptable for reference in license applications. The revised version of topical report WCAP-9221 will be an ar.ceptable non-proprietary

version of WCAP-9220. When either of these reports is used as a i
reference, both the proprietary report and the non-proprietary version L
must be referenced.
In accordance with established procedure, it is requested that Uestinghouse issue revised versions of these reports within three months of receipt of this letter include the flRC acceptance letter, the enclosed evaluation, and changes resulting fmm the review.
