Portland General Electric Company Trojan Nuclear Plant Rainier, Oregon Docket No. 50-344
Subject:
RECENT INCREASE 0 ' SEISMIC ACTIVITY NEAR MOUNT ST. HELENS,; WASHINGTON There have been reports over the past several days of increased seismic activity nea.r Mount St. Helens, approximately 33 miles ENE of the Trojan site.
Seismic activity has increased steadily to approximately 40 events (tremors) per hour.
The strongest event was reported es 4,4 Richter on the afternoon of March 24.
No mation or other effects have been observed by Trojan site personnel, nor has any motion been detected on the plant seismic monitoring instrumentation.
Increased seismic ectivity is considered to be one of the early warnings of volcanic activity.
Volcanic eruption, which last occurred at Mount St. Helens in 1857, has been considered in the siting of the Trojan plant and concluded to present minimal risk to the plant.
The Trojan plant is currently operating at approximately 65% power, on "coastdown" in preparation for refueling which is scheduled to comence on April 9,1980.
The NRC Resident Inspectors are continuing to follow reports of seismic or other signs of volcanic ac.ivity in the area of Mount St. Helens, and have been in coninunication with WRC Headquarters personnel.
There has been substantial media coverage of this occurrence, both locally and nationally, CONTACT:
