SUBJECT:

FLOW BLOCXAGE IN ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT AT ANO CAUSED BY CORBICULA sp (ASIATIC CLAMS)

Following the beginning of AE00 case studies to gather information and develop recommendations to address this subject, your offfee issued a memorandum dated October 21, 1980 which reported your findings to that date for appropriate use by the responsible program offices. On the following day, October 22, 1980, representatives of NRR, IE and AEOD attended a meeting with the licensee wherein the history of the problem and the corrective actions were discussed. In addition, representatives of MRR, IE and AE00 met on Novmber 17, 1980 to ensure that everyone was brought up to date regarding the status of the problem.f In this latter meeting it was mutually agreed that the interio corrective actions identified by the licensee's letter of November 6,1980 are consistent with the preliminary recocmendations for ANO made by AE00 in the October 21, 1980 memorandum.

Vith regard to the operating history of foulfng in cooling water systems in other plants, IE is drafting a bulletin which will ask all licensees to report whether they have expertenced fouling problems in SVS and to assess the adequacy of the preventive maintenance and surveillance requirement for SVS. We feel that these actions are adequate to address the problem at this time.

',le will continue to keep abreast of furth er developments and will keep AE00 f nfomed of all significant developnents regarding this issue at AMO.
