Docket Nos. STN 50-531
'TN 50-550 Dr. Glenn G. Sherwood, Manager Safety & Licensing Operation General Electric Company 175 Curtner Avenue San Jose, California 95125
Dear Dr. Sherwood:
SUBJECT:
APPLICATIONS FOR EXTENSION OF APPROVAL TERMS FOR PDA-9 and PDA-10 In your letter to H. Denton, dated November 30, 1978 you requested a two-year extension of PDA-1 for GESSAR-238 NI.
You also requested a two-year extension of PDA-9 for GESSAR-251 and PDA-10 for GESSAR-238 NSSS on the basis that the nuclear steam supply systems were of a common design.
As you know, we approved a two-year administrative extension for PDA-1 on December 22, 1978.
However, at this time, we do not intend to act on your request to extend PDA-9 and PDA-10.
As set forth in the Commission's policy statement, each application for a PDA extension will be subject to an assessment of the design with respect to the Category I, II, III, and IV matters approved for imple-mentation :ince the regulatory requirements cutoff date for that PDA, It is our intention to notify each PDA holder individually about these matters, to the degree practical, approximately six months prior to the PDA expiration date.
Since PDA-9 and PDA-10 are due to expire in March 1980, we have not yet identified those matters for the specific cases of the GESSAR-251 and GESSAR-238 NSSS designs.
Consequently, we intend to notify you in September 1979 of the PDA extension matters which you must address in order to extend PDA-9 and PDA-10 for two additional We anticipate no difficulty in completing this review and extend-years.
ing these PDA's prior to their expiration dates.
