,6 FEB 131979 MEMORANDUM FOR:
W. R. Butler, Chief, Containment Systems Franch, DSS FROM:
C. J. Anderson, Containment Systems Brar.ch, DSS
SUBJECT:
MARCH 22, 1979 MEETING WITH UCLA (I. CATTON) TO DISCUSS RSR P0OL DYNAMIC RESEARCH PROGRAMS This is to let you know of our plans to meet with UCLA (I. Catton and C. Chan) to discuss the status of their NRC-RSR, funded steam transient research program. This meeting which is endorsed by RSR (R. Cudlin) is scheduled for 9:00 AM March 22, 1979 in P-ll4.
The results of preliminary steam tests at UCLA have indicated a relation between chugging loads, vent mass flux and pool temperature.
At certain mass flux and pool temperature combinations, large lateral loads were observed.
In addition, Catton has stated that those tests do not appear to support the Mark II owners' contention that vent lateral loads are random in direction.
Questions related to this topic have been raised at recent ACRS subcommittee meetings where Mark II pool dynamic loads were discussed.
We have reviewed our lead plant criteria in light of these concerns.
This has included another look at the related lead plant supporting program tests.
We conclude that the lead plant criteria are conservative.
The questions raised could have some impact on the acceptability of several loads proposed by the Mark II owners for the Intennediate Plant Program.
At this time we do not know enough about the UCLA steam tests to detennine their applicability to Mark II conditions.
The purpose of the meeting on March 22, 1979 is to provide the staff and its consultants from BNL with a better understanding of the UCLA pool dynamics program.
In addition, some effort may be made to redirect the remainder of the UCLA FY 79 program, in cooperation with RSR, to obtain infonnation useful to NRR.
The above contacts with UCLA have and will continue to be coordinated with Bob Cudlin in the Analysis Develo 'ne Br
