APR 101979 The Honorable William J. Janklow Governor of South Dakota Pierre, South Dakota 57501
Dear Governor Janklow:
I am pleased to respond to your letter of February 26, 1979 in which you requested that the U.S. Pluclear Regulatory Commission (fiRC) coordinate efforts with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the South Dakota Department of Environmental Protection to conduct a comprehensive assessment of radiation doses to persons living in and around the Edgemont and Cottonwood communities.
Reccg-nizing the need for a radiological assessment, the fiRC staff has just begun such an assessment in conjunction with our review of the plan proposed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) for decommissioning and reclamation of the Edgemont mill site.
We are currently working with the mill owner (TVA), the USEPA, and your Department of Environmental Protection to determine the need for off-site remedial actions.
The survey addressed in the draft USEPA report, enclosed with your letter, was the first step in our assess-ment and was performed in orcer to determine what off-site locations need to be looked at in detail. When finalized, the report will be used as part of the basis for our determination of the need for remedial actions.
Please be assured of our continuing efforts in this matter and that we will continue to work closely with your Department of Environmental Protection and the USEPA.
If you need further information, please let us know.
Sincerely, Gawk 9 12 : _e n William J. Dircks, Director Office of fluclear Material Safety and Safeguards 790$gggg,,,j
