Dear Mr. Scouter:
This is in response to your letter dated March 31, 1979 in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, records regarding the non-use of Boron to flood the Unit 2 reactor core at the Three Mile Island fluclear Station.
The Unit 2 reactor scrammed (i.e. the fission reaction was terminated) within twelve seconds of the transcient.
Borated water contained in the core flood tank is to provide for emergency shutdown of the fissi.on reaction.
In this case, its use was not necessa y.
- However, there was a partial discharge of borated water from the core flood tanks as noted en the p. 3 of chronology in the enclosed IE Bulletin 79-05A.
This completes action on your request.
Sineer ly, y
