Dear Mr. Lex:
SUBJECT:
EVALUATION OF BECHTEL TOPICAL REPORT BN-TOP-4, "SUBCOMPARTMENT PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE TRANSIENT ANALYSIS" The NRC staff has completed its evaluation of the subject topical report which describes the COPDA code that Bechtel uses for analysis of transient pressures within containment subcompartments. We find the subject topical report acceptable for reference in licensing applications.
A detailed evaluation of your report is enclosed.
Based on our evaluation, we conclude that the COPDA code is acceptable for use in predicting:
(1) nominal values of subcompartment pressures when sonic vent flow conditions exist; and (2) conservative values of subcom-partment pressures when subsonic vent flow conditions exist. Uncertainty.
analyses should be performed using relevant available data, whenever the COPDA code is used for subcompartment analyses involving sonic vent flow conditions.
Also, we require that plant dependent information that is input to the COPDA code be provided and justified for each application.

. A copy of this letter and its enclosure shculd be included in the front of the final revision to your report.
This final revirion should incor-porate and update all additional submissions not yet incorporated into the basic report.
Thirty-five copies of this final revision should be sent to the staff within sixty days.
