Dear Mr. Crow:
I have delayed responding to your letter of flovember 9, as I have been discussing the nature of my response with Dr. Shum of your My suggestions regarding grcund water monitoring and waste water lagoon design at the United Nuclear Corporation Rhode Island office.
1 plant are as follows.
I believe that sampling of the monitor wells monthly is desirable.
tionitor well samples should be analyzed for gross alpha and gross beta.
If the gross alpha value exceeds 15 pc/l or the gross beta value ex-ceeds 50 pc/1, then the water should be analyzed for the specific The nonradicactive parameters that should radioactive elements present.
If nitrate be analyzed for are pH, nitrate and nitrite, and fluoride.and analyzed for cadmium, mercury, nickel, and zinc.
- The water supply well shoUld be' sampled monthly and-the same tests.

run as recommended above, except that the heavy metal analyses should j
be performed regardless of the nitrogen value.
j The raffinate ponds should be sampled mcathly in such a way that Pond the sample is as representative as possible of the entire pond.
samples should be analyzed as described above for. the water supply well 7
samples.
